A campus cafe introduced a discount for customers bringing reusable cups. In the first month, the proportion of drinks sold in disposable cups fell from eighty percent to sixty percent. The total number of drinks sold also increased. The manager therefore could not calculate the change in the number of disposable cups using percentages alone. Staff began recording both daily sales and cup types. Some customers forgot their own cups, so the cafe introduced a small deposit-based borrowing scheme. Cups borrowed through this scheme must be returned before the deposit is refunded.
