A college installed tanks to collect rainwater from the roof of its sports hall. The water is used for the gardens rather than for drinking. Before installation, staff estimated how much roof runoff could be captured during an average year. Actual collection was lower than expected because one winter was unusually dry. Nevertheless, the system reduced the amount of mains water used outdoors. Filters need regular cleaning, and the college includes this work in its maintenance budget. The project report argues that savings should be judged over several years instead of from the first year alone.
