Lecturer: Urban trees can make streets more comfortable by providing shade. However, planting trees is not simply a matter of choosing the fastest-growing species. Roots need enough space, and some species require more water than a city can supply. Our neighbourhood project compared three possible sites. The school yard had plenty of room, but the soil was poor. The shopping street had good soil, yet underground cables limited planting space. We chose the park entrance because both space and soil were suitable. Volunteers will monitor the young trees every week during their first summer. This follow-up matters as much as the planting itself.

বক্তা: শহরের গাছ ছায়া দিয়ে রাস্তাকে আরামদায়ক করে। তবে শুধু দ্রুত বাড়ে এমন প্রজাতি বাছলেই হয় না। শিকড়ের জায়গা ও পানির চাহিদা দেখতে হয়। আমাদের প্রকল্প তিনটি জায়গা তুলনা করেছে। স্কুলের উঠানে জায়গা ছিল, মাটি খারাপ। দোকানের রাস্তায় মাটি ভালো, তবে নিচে তার থাকায় জায়গা সীমিত। পার্কের প্রবেশপথে মাটি ও জায়গা দুটিই ভালো বলে সেটি নেওয়া হয়েছে। প্রথম গ্রীষ্মে স্বেচ্ছাসেবীরা প্রতি সপ্তাহে গাছ দেখবেন। লাগানোর মতো পরের যত্নও গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।
