Researchers compared summer temperatures on two streets in a fictional town. One street had mature trees; the other had very little shade. Afternoon measurements were lower on the tree-lined street. However, the streets also differed in traffic volume and building height. The researchers therefore avoided claiming that trees alone explained the difference. They recommended measuring more streets and recording wind conditions. Their report also noted that newly planted trees would take years to provide the same shade as mature ones. The study suggests a possible benefit of urban trees while illustrating why comparisons must consider more than one factor.
